Taken Away

A new caption, and a new layout for posts. This should be fun.

So first up a quick word on the caption. This was supposed to be a quickie, but the story just kept growing. Since it usually goes the other way, I try not to cut myself short when the ideas keep coming. If I don't have a second image, I'll do some revising if the text gets too small, but for this one everything seemed to wrap up nicely and I didn't need to cut too much.

Now onto the new post layout. The results of the poll were 24 to 16 in favor of keeping the older post style. And while I respect the verdict, the sample size is just too small for me to put much stock in the result. So I'm going to try out the click-through format for a little while, just to see if I like it. If I do, it'll stay, or if I don't/enough people request to go back to the old style I will. But for now, I want to see how this goes.

  1. The sample size is too small? Wow, that just seems like a lame way of saying, "I want to try click-through despite the vote, but I don't want you to feel bad/upset about it." I know what a sample size is and why a large enough one is important for studies, but having 40 people vote on a post is a pretty high turnout here. If I'm wrong, what number would have been conclusive for you?

Despite the tone of the earlier sentences, I'm not trying to be snide. I'm just a bit taken aback and a touch disappointed. Nothing you've done has lost me as a regular visitor and rare commenter.

    1. I appreciate the input, and yes in the end this is my blog and I will do what I believe is in the best interest of both myself and the people who come here to read my work.

I'm sorry if I have made it seem like I'm trying to cover up an unpopular decision, but I stand by my earlier statement of the sample size being too small.

And since you asked, let's run some numbers (this is going to get a little nerdy, so if you want my answer of how many people I wanted to respond, just skip down a few paragraphs):

Since the date of the post, this blog has received 36,772 pageviews. Now, assuming that the same people are viewing everyday (which I know isn't true), that would mean there are 5253 people who view this blog.

That's still a little high, so let's assume that every viewer looks at two, maybe three pages, just to make things a little more fair. This brings down the number of unique viewers to around 2000.

In standard statistical hypothesis testing, the threshold for proving a hypothesis is usually set at 5%. So for this poll, the hypothesis was that a significant amount of my viewers voted. In order for this to be considered "true," 5% of the unique viewers would have needed to vote. There were a total of 44 votes in the poll. Unfortunately this is only 2.2%, so the statement that a significant number of viewers voted is rejected.

In order for the results to "valid," the minimum sample size I would have accepted is 100 votes.

Please do not take this as a personal attack, as I really do appreciate the input. But I wanted to make it clear that I take this blog seriously and I am not making decisions on a whim. I am trying to create the best possible environment for both myself as a creator and you as the audience.

Several other cappers have suggested this switch as a means of better determining the kinds of captions you all like to see, and in an effort to continue to turn out quality captions, I have decided to give it a try.

    2. I don't take it as a personal attack at all. I understand you may do what you like with your blog, what with it being yours and all; though, I would say I was accusing you of trying to explain away your decision rather than cover it up.

I do understand to have a scientifically accurate survey of something you would need a larger sample size if sampling your entire visitor pool. I suppose the simplest way to put this is I saw this as less of a survey and more of a vote.

I also understand this may work out better for everyone by giving you better metrics. This was never in contention.
May you continue to find inspiration.
